One day in Gori: the fortress, the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe

  • 2 min read

Gori is a quiet, friendly city of about 50,000 people, but it has more history than its size suggests: a fortress that guarded the road across Georgia, the town where Stalin was born and, just down the river, one of the oldest towns in the country. This route covers the highlights in one day, either from a night in Gori or as a long day from Tbilisi.

The plan at a glance

  • 9:00: Gori Fortress
  • 10:30: The Stalin Museum, birth house and railway carriage
  • 12:30: Lunch in the centre
  • 14:00: Taxi to Uplistsikhe
  • 16:30: Optional detour to Ateni Sioni
  • 19:00: Dinner in Gori

Morning: Gori Fortress

Start with the climb to Gori Fortress on the hill in the middle of the city. In the cool of the morning, the walls give you a view over the whole city, the meeting of the Liakhvi and the Mtkvari and, if the air is clear, the snowy Caucasus to the north. On the way down, look at the bronze warriors on the slope below.

Late morning: the Stalin Museum

Walk down to the Stalin Museum at the end of Stalin Avenue. Start at the small house where he was born in 1878, now under a grand pavilion, then tour the museum halls and see his green armoured railway carriage. The displays are a Soviet-era tribute rather than a balanced history, which is part of what makes them interesting. Join a guided tour if you can.

Lunch

Eat in one of the restaurants in the centre. Order khinkali, the big Georgian dumplings, mtsvadi (grilled meat), and a salad of tomatoes and cucumbers with walnuts. Read our guide to food and wine in Shida Kartli.

Afternoon: Uplistsikhe

Take a taxi to Uplistsikhe, about 20 minutes east of the city, and ask the driver to wait. Spend an hour and a half exploring the rock-cut streets, halls and cellars of this 3,000-year-old town, climb to the church on top for the view over the river and leave through the tunnel.

Late afternoon: Ateni Sioni (optional)

If you still have energy and daylight, ask your driver to continue to Ateni Sioni, about 10 km south of Gori, to see the 7th-century church and its frescoes in the late light.

Evening: dinner in Gori

Back in Gori, have dinner in a local restaurant or at your guesthouse. Try a glass of Atenuri, the white wine of the Ateni valley, and toast your day the Georgian way.

Tips for the day

  • Start early in summer: Uplistsikhe has little shade and gets very hot after midday.
  • Carry cash: for taxis, tickets and small cafés.
  • Agree taxi prices first: including waiting time at Uplistsikhe.
  • Wear good shoes: the fortress paths and the rock at Uplistsikhe are steep and smooth.
