Monastery
Kintsvisi Monastery lies on a forested slope in the Dzama valley, about 10 km from the town of Kareli. Its main church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was built of brick in the early 13th century, in Georgia’s golden age, and its walls hold one of the largest and finest cycles of medieval paintings in the country.
The paintings in the church of Saint Nicholas can be dated thanks to the royal portraits on its walls: King George III, his daughter Queen Tamar and her son George IV Lasha. Tamar’s reign, from about 1184 to 1213, is remembered as the high point of medieval Georgia. In the 15th century a local prince, Zaza Panaskerteli, rebuilt the narthex and had himself painted there too. The building is unusual for its time because it is built of red brick, which glows against the green of the forest.
Drive west from Gori to Kareli, about 25 minutes, then follow the road south to the village of Kintsvisi and the monastery. There is no regular public transport, so take a taxi from Kareli or Gori, or come with a driver.
